Hello: Without saying anything about Leap 42.2's default plasma desktop, just a list of questions. I have Leap 42.2 with deafult KDE desktop (plasma 5?): -desktop panel: how to see hight in pixels? -start menu classic mode: how to set old opensuse classification; menu/submenu, eg. Multimedia/Video players, Audio editors, Volume control etc, as it used to be? -how to set start menu: most frequently used application? (not favorites and recently used) -how to disable KDE wallett service window popping up (eg. every time after vivaldi startup) -where is screen saver settings? (not screen locker) -plasma system settings - search field: where is clear search field button? -measurement units: set to metric (not country) -time format: set to YYYY-MM-DD, not country, because I don't know which country uses this -keyboard switching by keyboard shortcut: disable keyboard layout changing popup/widget in the middle of the screen -kde5/plasma5 system settings: help/about doesn't show version number, why, how do I get it? -how to disable the menu button at the right edge of the bottom panel? -panel add widgets looks very ugly - very wide column at the left edge of the screen with HUGE ugly icons and big fonts - is this normal? -how to set font color to real black 0/0/0 rgb, not gray) on the panel, in the start menu, in the panel clock -how to prevent plasma5 to mess up KDE3 session (it even messes up kde3 session of users who never used/logged in to plasma5) -how to fix missing panel icons, many application icon on the panel is not shown, only empty space at their supposed locations, this depends also on icon them, but breeze (deafult?) is affected too. Finally, is it feasible to install KDE4 instead of this default thing, something that was available in 13.1 and 13.2? If yes, how? That info was removed. What you can do as a workaround: let's say you want the height to be 32 pixels, open some app like Dolphin, click on the Window's settings menu button (top-left), go to More Actions, Special Window Settings, click the Size radio button and enter the vertical screen size minus the panel height you desire. OK the dialog. Position the application to the top of the screen. Now adjust your panel height to the bottom of the application. You could also use the KRuler utility but I'd say that's more fiddly.
-how to set start menu: most frequently used application? (not favorites and recently used)
Feature only just added to most recent Plasma release. Not sure if that will be in Leap 42.3. You'd have to switch to the relevant KDE repo.
-how to disable KDE wallett service window popping up (eg. every time after vivaldi startup)
Depends on your circumstances. If you're willing to compromise on the security aspects you can select the classic blowfish method, click Next and set to a blank password. But obviously not a good idea if you want to prevent anybody ever accessing personal data or passwords in KWallet-protected apps on your machine.
-where is screen saver settings? (not screen locker)
Screen savers were removed a few releases ago. In part due to being deemed irrelevant by today's demands of power-saving, etc. The one things you can still achieve with current Plasma, under that Screen Locker section, is the setting of a wallpaper slideshow which effectively acts like a screensaver as soon as the screen locks.
-plasma system settings - search field: where is clear search field button?
I don't know what you mean exactly - a global search within System Settings? In mine, it's right there top-right when you open it. But it's misleading, not technically a search, it's more of a filter, so there's no need for a button since if the term you search for exists it highlights the settings categories below that contain it.
-kde5/plasma5 system settings: help/about doesn't show version number, why, how do I get it?
Under Help -> System Settings -> Version tab. Or open the KInfocentre for KDE Plasma/Frameworks versions.
-how to disable the menu button at the right edge of the bottom panel?
Lock widgets.
-panel add widgets looks very ugly - very wide column at the left edge of the screen with HUGE ugly icons and big fonts - is this normal?

In KDE3 it was not only shown but the pixel number could be set/typed directly. In KDE4 the number could not be typed directly but still was shown. In KDE5 it isn't even shown. This is what KDE devs call progress. In KDE6 the panel size will be fixed, I suppose. What you can do as a workaround: let's say you

OK, I want different systems to have the same lookout. How am I supposed to set the same panel size for different logins on different systems if I don't know the pixel number? Is there a config file somewhere that includes that number?

I understand the risk and I don't let the apps (eg vivaldi) to handle passwords or info like that. I don't want to use kwallet at all. I don't want to set up an empty password, I want to turn off/disable kwallet completely. How? Why the desktop is forcing me to use it?

It would be OK, if I could set screen locker without password and could set blank screen (which I use for screen saver). I want the screen go blank after x minutes but be able to wake it up without entering password. Is it serious that it is not possible anymore?

OK, it's a filter. E.g. if I want to find among the settings e.g. "keyboard" I type there "keyboard" and only the settings which have "keyboard" setting options remain black, others become gray. If I want to filter for another word, I have to delete the content (the word "keyboard") of the filter box manually. There used to be a small icon (x) next to the filter box and clicking it emptied the filter box. Plasma 5 doesn't have this small icon.

Before I send screenshots I want to be sure that I have an official clean plasma 5 installation, to make sure that KDE4 or KDE3 packages are not interfering with plasma 5. I have only the following repos enabled: 10 | repo-non-oss | openSUSE-Leap-42.2-Non-Oss 11 | repo-oss | openSUSE-Leap-42.2-Oss 14 | repo-update | openSUSE-Leap-42.2-Update-Oss 15 | repo-update-non-oss | openSUSE-Leap-42.2-Update-Non-Oss 1 | Packman | Packman In YaST Package Manager Patterns window I see "Plasma 5 Desktop" and "KDE Desktop Environment" patterns. In my plasmashellrc file I have: [PlasmaViews][Panel 3][Horizontal1280] panelVisibility=0 thickness=28 I don't know why it is panel 3 (I have only one, though I may have messed up the configuration a couple of times on initial installation, perhaps that explains the numbering), and neither do I understand why it shows visibility as 0 when it is permanently visible. Indeed, I don't know if this really is the file called by plasma to read the panel height configuration or just some vestige of previous tinkering. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think it was removed maliciously. I may be wrong, but I have some vague recollection of a developer working on it saying that it was more problematic to implement than one might imagine, perhaps because it was a hack in previous versions or because the new frameworks create complexities, I don't recall.

Using the same principle as I describe above, but more simply, you can look at the Special Window Settings of any maximized app and the current vertical height minus your panel will already be displayed there.

I don't use KWallet and it was bugging me too after I upgraded to Plasma5 but the version in KDE4 also required an instruction to keep out the way too. Upon first instance of the 'wizard' appearing, say when connecting to a wireless network, ISTR having to select 'insecure, no password' after which it would keep quiet. Since I conceded and set a blank password the other week I've been bothered no more.
I type there "keyboard" and only the settings which have "keyboard" setting options remain black, others become gray. The repos are correct but, again from some vague recollection that I may have confused, I seem to remember that whilst your method may have been fine in the past, a discussion a while back suggested adding KDE/Plasma on top of a minimal installation with current openSUSE could be problematic. Perhaps it doesn't provide all the hooks that assure a smooth Plasma experience. I've only ever done a standard KDE install. Perhaps you'd be best off doing it that way around, selecting Plasma at installation and then adding KDE3 afterwards. You may have simply changed your icons but your mention of 'black' system settings above makes me wonder if you've got a less-than-optimal bunch of configurations. I use the standard Breeze (light and dark) themes on a couple of machines and the System Settings icons are full colour. Some previous Plasma5 defaults had some fairly ghastly monochrome Breeze icons in some places (e.g. Dolphin toolbars, sidebars and mimetype icons) that didn't aid with recognition or selection. Later versions have been better configured by default with more easily identifiable icons. Perhaps that's the sort of thing you get from a default Plasma install but not necessarily when you add it manually? gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

- Task manager tooltips are way too big. Can I make them smaller? The best woold be a simple one-line tooltip with text only. http://www.susepaste.org/30175148
It appears that - in the GUI at least - you can only turn off taskbar tooltips altogether, under Desktop Behaviour -> Workspace -> Show Informational Tips (or by right-clicking a taskbar entry, going to Task Manager Settings -> Show Tooltips).
- Add panel widgets is way too big and wide too. Can I set it to show smaller icons/boxes? http://www.susepaste.org/54474249
Looks normal to me. Same as on my system anyway. It's something you only use momentarily though.
- Old, well structured start menu categories are missing. There are no submenus where used to be. For example multimedia menu used to have several submenus like Volume manager, Video Players, Audio Players, Audio Editors etc. http://www.susepaste.org/44747970
If you right-click the menu, go to Alternatives and choose the older Application Launcher, do you still not get categories (even after configuring that style of menu)?
- How can I turn off translucency for switch user? (Translucency for windows is turned off already.) http://www.susepaste.org/21234547
Never seen this before. Just checked, same on mine too. Don't know where that's set.
- Configure desktop (start menu/settings/configure desktop) and dolphin file manager (start menu/system/dolphin) are not added to recent application ins start menu? How to make them added to there?
The Recent Apps don't seem to populate correctly on my system. Perhaps it requires re-logging in.
- How can I set spectacle to save in jpeg/jpg as default, not png.
Under Spectacle's Preferences -> Save Options, it says that PNG is always set as default. Have you tried appending ".jpg" there in the Filename field to see if it adheres to your choice?
- How can I disable keyboard layout switch popup icon? http://www.susepaste.org/26934915
Even by KDE standards you have some extremely esoteric preferences. I can only imagine that if controls or overrides for some of things did exist, it would be in config files, not the GUI.
