Re: [SLE] Problem getting started with Apache
go into Yast and there is a run level editor, if httpd (apache) is installed you'll see it there, be sure it goes on for run levels 3, 4 and 5. If it ain't in there try #which httpd. If you have to install it new be sure to use updated openssh if you use ssl. there's a write up about why at openssh.org. On 2002.09.29 18:16 Warren Light wrote:
I am trying to access apache on my SuSE 8.0 Por system, but having difficulties and am a little confused. I am not even sure if apache is INSTALLED. I don't know how to tell for sure.
When I try to access http://localhost with any browser, I get this: The connection was refused when attempting to contact loalhost.
Does this imply that apache IS up but some problem such as permissions is
blocking me? I have searched the Internet and no one else has this problem, so it is probably my own dumb ignorance. My installation is pretty vanilla-flavored except for adding Codeweaver's Crossover plugin (not root), mozilla 1.1, and OpenOffice.
Why I think that apache is installed and I'm just too dumb to see it: + Apache is listed on the box that SuSE 8.0 Pro came in. (There were no SuSE install errors.) + Apache was loaded (and worked) on the 7.3 version. Why not 8.0? + The manuals imply that it is there. + I cannot find anyone else on the Internet that has this problem.
Why I think that apache is NOT installed: - It doesn't work. - Directories mentioned in various documentation are not found on my system. - I don't see apache mentioned on the LILO startup screen. - I can't find it on the dvd - at least not by the name "apache". - It's not in the runtime editor list. - The SuSE Install software packages progam does not list apache.
SuSE documentation on this is poor. Page 272 is abomitally inadiquate!
If I have to attempt to install apache from elsewhere, will it work on SuSE 8.0? Or will there be failures due to incompatibilities?
Thanks, Warren Light
