Weakness with cablemodem;l surboard SB4200E
Merry meet venerable Sir or Lady and Blessed Be. /May we and all our relatives be safe and secure/ /May we and all our relatives be happy at heart/ Yesterday I bought SuSE 9.0 professional. I was having doubts between Mandrake; which I was told has some difficulty to financially recover and SuSE 9.0. I chose the last because I had SuSE 7.0 in my possesion and was happy with it and because it contains the office program project management. Unfortunatly do I fail to install the modem(Surfboard SB4200E via LAN eth0 8639too) and therefore I have difficulties connecting to the internet. The computer doesnt find a modem at all. (I tried booting with acpi=off). And I think I should reinstall it under different circumstances. I faced the same problems with 7.0, thats why I bought 9.0, so perhaps anyone give me a hint or two. The support service are fine people, but because I dont own a telephone, they gave me the best of their help and made a reference to the telephone service. The activationcode is 48180122468262 and the ISBN 648866201256. Thank you all for making this generosity possible! ... AFAIK the modem is not a modem for your PC. I presume it's a "cable modem" with an ethernet connection to your PC. So you have to setup your ethernetport (eth0 ?) to get a IP address from your "modem", with DHCP. So enable/install DHCPClient and configure your networkhardware with Yast. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

Unfortunatly do I fail to install the modem(Surfboard SB4200E via LAN eth0 8639too) Hi!, When you say "I fail to install the modem", do you mean you are trying to set it up as a modem, or it is failing to get its internet settings. If you are connecting via the LAN, then you do not need to install it as a modem - you just need to configure your machine in the network card settings to get the details via DHCP [Yast, Network settings if I remember correctly]. If you turn the cable modem on first and let it "boot up", then it should be able to let you get an IP.
If you set up a static IP on your machine, you can access the cable modems web interface [I have a SB4100E which I assume is similar!] at http://192.168.100.1 Hope this helps in some way! A clearer explanation of your setup would be handy, e.g.: "Cablemodem connected via ethernet cable to network card in computer, this machine is the only one that will be connected to the modem" Thanks! Jon
The SB4200E is NOT a modem -- it is a CABLE MODEM. They are different. 1. A MODEM connects a pc to the internet via a phone line. The interface to the modem is a COM port on the pc. The pc controls the modem using Hayes commands, going off hook, dialing, etc. 2. A CABLE MODEM connects a pc to the internet via a coaxial connection to an ISP (cable in other words). The interface to the cable modem is a network interface card (NIC) using Cat 5 cable (or possibly coax) to the pc, and by a coaxial cable to the ISP's interface box. The pc does NOT control the cable modem. In fact, the usual control interface to the cable modem (from the point of view of the pc) is by way of a built-in web page on the cable modem. In order to connect to the cable modem, you have to get the ISP to set the MAC address of your pc's NIC into the cable modem's set up. Speak to your ISP!
