[SLE] Unable to upgrade to XFree86 3.3.6
Hi, I downloaded the XFree86 3.3.6 version from suse ftp site for 6.3. I tried installing or rather upgrading the existing XFree86 3.3.5 to 3.3.6 on my m/c. When i used 'rpm' command to query the XFree86.3.3.6.rpm package under /usr/lib, the rpm command came out with the error "Cannot query package". I tried to install, but once again it came out saying "error: cannot install package ". What can be the reason?? Is it because the XFree86 3.3.6 package has been built with an rpm version higher than the one which came with 6.3 (i,e 3.0.3 34). How can i know with what rpm version the XFree86 3.3.6 has been built with?? Should i take the latest rpm version and from where?? Whenever I have had troubles like this it has been because the downloaded package is corrupt. Have you checked the downloaded size versus the original size? Even if they are the same, try downloading the package again -- it may have still been corrupt ("bad magic") somewhere. Hi, Thanks!! But if i try to query the same on my 6.2 Linux with 'rpm -qpl xf86-3.3.6-18.i386.rpm', it gives the listing of all the files in the package. This is the reason for my queries!! Also, is this package sufficient for upgrading entirely to 3.3.6 or are there other XFree86 3.3.6 packages which i need to download for getting the entire X stuff. One more question!! Where can i get the OpenGL stuff for 6.3 / 6.2. I heard about Mesa and Metrolink. Which is better?? Or are there other OGL packages?? Raghav muzh wrote:

Hi, I downloaded the xf86-3.3.6-18.i386.rpm once again and could extract it on my 6.3 m/c. But, to my chagrin, i could not find xterm in the latest .rpm package. I just queried the package with the command 'rpm -qpl xf86-3.3.6-18.i386.rpm' and lo! there was no xterm in the /usr/bin/X11 directory. Does xterm come in some other xf86 rpm?? How can i get back xterm?? Does extracting the xf86 3.3.6 rpm lead to installation or is there anything else to bring up the new X server. After extraction, i checked the X server with the command 'xdpyinfo', but it still shows the old X server 3.3.5. Raghav Hi, Thanks!! There is a separate xterm.rpm at their ftp site. This threw me for a loop too. Just install the rpm, and everything will be fine.
