Sorry for this out of topic post but it is very often when you have win9x client in a network. The question is: how necessary it is to have a wins server? Cause I have none now in an intranet of 17 clients and have not noted any problem.... How do the win9x clients resolve the name if they dont have nobody to query to.. They do have a DNS server to which to go, but that one is outside our network and only responds (or should) to queries belonging to the global internet. If there can be an improvement regarding network load and response times I should set up some kind of wins server with Samba (you can do that with Samba, right?), otherwise things are going well as they are. Thanks in advance, Raúl P.S.: If this a repeated thread, I beg you forgive me since I am catching up with old mails. :-)
Hello, Raul. If a Windows machine cannot resolve a name from the name cache, host, lmhost, DNS or WINS, it will send out a broadcast packet. This works OK if all the machines are on the same network segment, as most routers do not allow broadcasts through. With such a small number of Windows machines, setting up a WINS server (yes, Samba can do that) might be more effort than it is worth. It will improve your network response times for these clients, but will not affect network load to any great extent. (Sticks neck out and waits to have it cut...) Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: suse-linux-e-return-76635-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com [mailto:suse-linux-e-return-76635-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com]O n Behalf Of Raul Gutierrez Segales Sent: 22 October 2001 16:58 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] (OT) not using a wins server Sorry for this out of topic post but it is very often when you have win9x client in a network.
