very quietly -- look around their site for the "upgrade" price, and you can typically get the "pro" version for $49 instead of $79 -- the difference is that with the "upgrade" you simply get the disks and one "quick install" manual, while with the "full product" you get additional manuals, bumper stickers, etc. [hey, they might even through in a stuffed geecko if you're lucky...] There is no corresponding price reduction on the "personal" version.

perhaps the second DVD contains things like scenery files for the flight simulator [flightgear] or any other "large" files that wouldn't be part of the "personal" set -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net

fontconfig, Xft2,
Hmmm. OK. I admit my ignorance. :o) What will these do for me?
GNOME 2.2,
Never use it. See my sig!
KDE 3.1,
Already got it as an update for 8.1. This is the best reason for buying the new release for those without broadband.
GnuCash 1.8.x
No job, not much money, so no need for that. :o) Although I could take a look I suppose.
MainActor,
Are they shipping the full version? Or just the demo? I thought MainActor was commercial software?
kernel 2.4.20,
Already running it, and let's face it, a point release in the stable kernel is hardly reason to upgrade a box.
XFree 4.3
I read the release notes. Not sure it'll do anything for me. I've no complaints about 4.2.
GCC 3.3
Er, they're shipping that? Is it going to be ready?
Java 1.4
I assume you mean 1.4.1? Already got it.
I mean, hot damn! Sounds like a buyer to me!
If you're a version number junkie, yes. If your reason to have a Linux box is to fiddle and tweak it, yes. If there's a specific package you need and you don't have the knowledge to install it yourself, yes. For anyone else, I'm not convinced it's worth it. Major upgrades aren't without risk. This is a point-release which contains a whole load of non-essential point-updates as far as I can see. I have every confidence that this list will go mad with enthusiasm for it though. :o) -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

They totally rebuild the way in which X handles fonts, you're best looking at the website http://fontconfig.org
MainActor, Are they shipping the full version? Or just the demo? I thought MainActor was commercial software?
Not sure, guess they could have licensed it
GCC 3.3 Er, they're shipping that? Is it going to be ready?
Can only assume yes...
If you're a version number junkie, yes. If your reason to have a Linux box is to fiddle and tweak it, yes.
That's me, plus if I wait for the FTP Edition, there's going to be a lot of people waiting for those GNOME updates...

I looked, but it doesn't seem too clear. Will they: * allow me to easily install any ttf font I happen to get hold of * have that font made available without root messing about with config files * work seemlessly in X, KDE, OpenOffice, Gimp, etc. * unfailingly print to my inkjet exactly as it appears on screen These are what I want from a font system. I still use OpenOffice from Windows because Linux's font handling is crap - difficult to manage and unpredictable WRT my printer. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

This is all as far as I can tell...

Yes, without having to restart X
* have that font made available without root messing about with config files
Yes
* work seemlessly in X, KDE, OpenOffice, Gimp, etc.
As soon as those apps include support for it, yes, apps that do already include Mozilla, AbiWord (it's in HEAD, expect it in the next 1.1 release), GNOME 2.2 (and I think GTK 2.2 - so GIMP built against that would), KDE 3.1. Don't know about OOo, check their website, and bear in mind that it'll be 1.0.2 in 8.2...
* unfailingly print to my inkjet exactly as it appears on screen
I hope so ;-) Seriously, libgnomeprint22 uses it, dunno about KDE's Print architecture.
These are what I want from a font system. I still use OpenOffice from Windows because Linux's font handling is crap - difficult to manage and unpredictable WRT my printer.
Expect a big improvement from fc/Xft2 There was a big piece about it in Linux Format issue 36 or 37, they've not made it into their online archines at www.linuxformat.co.uk yet, but I expect they will do at some point - worth keeping an eye on that... -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

I'm guessing that they are cramming more onto each cd. I don't think all those cd's from 8.1 have 650megs of files on each. Would you rather have them use "clever marketing" and proclaim "8.2 now includes 10 cd's"? It's the gigabytes of actual files that count. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Not really. I just want access to all the things that come with the distro. If they are putting more on the disc then that is great! As another soul pointed out, SuSE is going from 7 CD's to 5. Anyone know why? I'm curious?
I'm guessing that they are cramming more onto each cd. I don't think all those cd's from 8.1 have 650megs of files on each.
Actually, they are crammed full to bursting...
Would you rather have them use "clever marketing" and proclaim "8.2 now includes 10 cd's"? It's the gigabytes of actual files that count.

You are wrong. Why should we make CDs which are not full? Good day,
I'm guessing that they are cramming more onto each cd. I don't think all those cd's from 8.1 have 650megs of files on each.
Guessing works only until facts emerge... I looked at my 7 8.1 CDs They are all stuffed between 648 to 651 MB. Also go see: http://www.suse.com/us/company/press/press_releases/archive03/82.html ...which was put up yesterday. The 5CDs/2DVDs seems to be right. Question is what will be left out on the CDs. Any SuSE-people here who can tell us? Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

I was posing a "guess" as to why the number of cd's has been reduced. I guess the answer is a bunch of source has moved to dvd, which seems odd since alot of people don't have dvd's yet. So I think my guess was justified( although I should have just checked all my cd's.....just lazy). -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

While working with KDE 3.0.5 some applets/buttons have disappeared from the panel: kinternet and then the frame in which all the running programs are displayed. How can I put all in order? If I try to launch kinternet, it says: "kinternet is already running. It is the small icon showing a connector in your panel"!!! It is possible to view the programs running with add --> extension --> external taskbar. Every help appretiated, thank you.
