[S.u.S.E. Linux] Diamond Multi Media Monster M80 Sound Card
I've recently installed 5.2.and in general I am a newbie and have been tinkering with a couple of distributions though SuSE is going to be particularly helpful as I now can see what to expect. At this point I have no sound card(the Acer s20 I have has never functioned under even my OS/2) so I'd like to buy a card more current. The AWE64 is supported, but when I almost purchased a non-retail one in ISA last week one of the guys I spoke to suggested the Monster M80(PCI) as being the choice for sound output and that was confirmed buy a gamer I spoke to later. I have been unable to find anything on this card, that is will it work under linux, even if at reduced capability(the card difference between the one I was going to buy and it was about $25(US) so I thought it a good choice but I do want something for a 100 bucks) Also, as I recently bought a used Wincast/TV-dbx I might actually have a TV for the first time in a while! An idiot box to go along with my Linux box :-) Creative now has a PCI card, but I'd like to get the most for the money; does anyone have any experience with the Diamond? Best regards, Bob Russell kc8chq@juno.com Micro$oft, what do you want to spend today? If Microsoft built Cars: Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Well to use the AWE64 is going to be a slight problem, first you will need to upgrade the module with a patch to do soundfont tech. You can find a mini-HOWTO at <A HREF="http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Soundblaster-AWE.html"><A HREF="http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Soundblaster-AWE.html</A">http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Soundblaster-AWE.html</A</A>> Follow this and you will find the link to get the patch. I know a number of people who still haven't got it to work unless they use the OSS/LINUX ($20US) program. :( Also of note: Development Kernels have the AWE patch already built in to the kernel to make as a module. (called HACKER's Kernel by SuSE) which are 2.1.XX kernels. A chancey way to go, i wouldn't if I was limited in experance in Linux. I always thought including everything directly into the kernel the best way to have it, but starting with my soundcard I learned this is not so, you will need to load the sound support as a module for one thing. I suggest getting rid of kerneld(auto module install and deinstall) Well read the SOUND-HOWTO and the mini soundblaster-AWE.html, you will see.

I suggest a older card one with jumpers(not PNP). I know Gravis GUS cards work extreamly well and regular Soundblaster 16s with jumpers. This would be for direct kernel support of the sound modules that you set up. Other wise OSS/Linux has a bigger selection of sound cards to chose from if you want to pay 20 dollers that is. Creatives PCI wonderbitch AWE is not worth the buy. I'd go into details but I will shorten what I know of them cards. The card was made possible by thier takeover of Ensonic comp, they took thier PCI card and stuck a new label on it. It from what I have heard does not sound good at all. Currently I do not know of support for the Monster 80 sound card. Only 2 Diamonds are supported by OSS, and I have not seen any in the kernel config menu (support soundcard) -- Steven Udell Wayfarers hettar@teleport.com for truth love sudell@teleport.com and courage <A HREF="http://www.teleport.com/~hettar"><A HREF="http://www.teleport.com/~hettar</A">http://www.teleport.com/~hettar</A</A>> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Thanks for the insights and info! There are enough variables and headaches without adding one more. And besides I'd rather use my money for something that works.(I has a friend tell me that he switched back to his SB16 from a AWE32 after seeing no improvment in sound. Best regards, Bob Russell kc8chq@juno.com If it says "requires Win95 or better," install Linux! If Microsoft built Cars: You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought a Car 95 or a Car NT. But then you'd have to buy more seats. Well after using a SB16 for about 6 months, I found a deal on the full bore AWE64 w/4megs and it made a very big difference. Just using my copy of OSS (Which is so nice!), it looks like this cat /dev/sndstat OSS/Linux 3.8.1q (C) 4Front Technologies 1997 License serial number XXXXXXXX This copy of OSS is licensed to Dee McKinney Kernel: Linux wdm 2.0.33 #8 Sat Mar 7 16:35:12 MET 1998 i586 Card config: Generic PnP support SoundBlaster AWE64 Gold at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1,5 Emu 8000 Synthesizer Engine at 0x620 irq 5 drq 1,5 OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 SB MPU-401 at 0x330 irq 5 Audio devices: 0: Creative SB AWE64 Gold (4.16) (DUPLEX) 1: SB secondary device (DUPLEX) Synth devices: 0: AWE32-0.4.2 (RAM4096k) 1: Yamaha OPL-3 Midi devices: 0: Sound Blaster 16 Timers: 0: System clock Mixers: 0: Sound Blaster 1: AWE32 Equalizer ------------------------------------------------------------------- I beg to differ that this kind of upgrade doesn'ty make a difference. I don't know if this will help, but I just got my Soundblaster AWE32 PnP running under SuSE 5.2 with the OSS program included with SuSE 5.2. It says it has no time limit! Thanks for the info!:-) I guess the DaimondMM MX200(I thought it was the M80) will have to wait. Shucks! All in good time! If Microsoft built Cars: But the Macintosh car owners could get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars, which would make them run much slower.
