Re: A _small_ replacement for midnite commander / mc

Oliver,
Sorry haines, we were talking NOT of an editor, but (see topic!) about an mc replacement.
Ouch! My apologies.
Nevermind.
Anyone got experiences with git? (have 7.0 only, its on 7.3)
Couldn't resist finding git and trying it out (nostalgia for my DOS days). The git executable is a bit over 300 kB, which would fit on a diskette, but it seems libraries are needed. Wouldn't this disqualify git as a diskette utility? Is there a way around this? True. That is of no use then.

Sorry!

I'm sorry I missed the beginning of this thread, but I take it that the OP wanted a smaller mc clone to put on a boot floppy? Why not just make a bootable cdrom with mc on it? Mkcdrec does this automagically for you. Of course, 651 KB will fit on a floppy, so you could boot with one floppy and swap in the mc-utility floppy. Otherwise, I'm afraid you will have to use a dos boot floppy, there are a bunch of small Norton Commander clones which fit easily on a floppy. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Right, and THAT was the original question: When this is possible for DOS, why are the Linux Versions always that large? I imagine "list.com" - really simple, really basic, but only 26507 bytes long. So what the heck makes the Linux versions that large at all?!?! -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/Olli/olli.html I I http://www.bmw-roadster.de/Friends/friends.html I I http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGAP-93 I I mailto:VGAP-93-subscribe@yahoogroups.com I I http://home.t-online.de/home/spacecraft.portal I

I found clex , which is about as simple as it gets. You need an external editor, must define all your F keys links to external apps, and it compiles to 120k. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

What about trying "the real thing". I have copied Midnight Commander off an older version of Kent Robotti's Ramfloppy rescue-disk. 380 k and no asking for lib's. You might try it from this url home.tiscali.dk/isl27908 mvh... Morten Christensen
