Anybody know how to get the touchpad activated on a Laptop with 9.1? I can't seem to find any option in Yast. HP Pavilion 4600. It worked fine in 9.0 (in fact it was the only distro which installed well here).

I've kind of got the opposite problem. The thing always works, even when I remove the original entry out of the XF86Config file. I'm trying to use an external mouse/keyboard and monitor. It all works except the mouse. It's just a standard PS2 MS Intellimouse with a scroll wheel. It worked fine under 9.0, but 9.1 just does not seem to want to work with it. Anyone got any ideas? -- Steve Boddy

This is my XF86Config generated by SaX2. Apparently YaST only sets it to be a generic mouse. However I have found that it becomes overly sensitive. I have played around with some settings to make it usable. (The 2.4 kernel is fine).

Jim Are you using the synaptics driver (I think Jerry said he is)? I've been using the defaults from YaST ...and just turning the damned touchpad off when it becomes squirrely as I type. It's a hassle, but not as much as seeing

I'm using the default for 9.0 also. On boot I'm doing a "tpconfig -t0" to turn off the tapping on the touchpad. That fixed most of the erratic stuff. With tapping on, it seems like typing alone will be detected as taps, causing all kinds of unexpected surprises. The X11 config file changes also slowed down the scroller to a much more reasonable speed. Those were the two most annoying things. I thought for the longest time that I had bad hardware, but then I noticed that everything worked fine in XP, which I'm almost never in. Good luck Jim

Jim Thanks. Probably gonna need it. <G> -- ..."Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio "If music be the food of love, why can't rabbits sing?"
Jerry, I had a very similar problem with a Dell Latitude notebooks. The 2.4 kernel worked fine etc. I know this may sound crazy but I found the problem to be the display setup, not the mouse. SuSE 9.1 and 2.6 kernel installed with VGAS or something like that, I can't remember, but I changed the display to Dell Laptop display panel and it works just fine. I have done this on several different Dell notebooks and it solved the problem on all of them. the steps control center/YaST2/hardware/Graphics card and monitor/change/Graphic Card.....and I set it to Dell laptop display panel. I would look for something that matches the HP and change to it... hope this helps....joe On Wed, 2004-09-22 at 18:00, Jerry Feldman wrote:

The solution is simple. after you get all fired up, go to a terminal like CTL- ALT- F1 and then su to root. Then init 3 and type sax2 When sax comes up look for the mouse settings and select synaptic, touchpad. Save it all and now the touchpad tapping will work. Oh, you will have to do Init 5 or startx to get back to your screen. If it is to sensitive then go into the Control Center and find the mouse page - under peripherals and play with the mouse settings. My Dell works much better with Pointer accel @2x, drag start time=500msec, Drag start distance=4 pixels, and pointer threshold= 4 pixels. Play with them and you can find some happy setting. At least my Dell is now tolerable. I just wish I could find a way to disable the touchpad scrolling feature and life would be perfect. Well, maybe not perfect, but just a helluva lot nicer.
