Hi all. Has anyone tried the kvm stuff detailed at http://en.opensuse.org/KVM ??? Everything goes fine until 4. install the quest: qemu-system-x86_64 -boot d -cdrom /home/user/opensuse.iso -hda opensuse.img at which point, the entire screen (in or out of X) is taken over, and the upper left part has a DOS-like bit which churns until it invites me to hit <ENTER> to install Windows (which is what I mean to do), <R> for repair (irrelevant), or <F3> to exit. However, it doesn't respond to the keyboard. I'm able to get around VTs by way of CTRL-ALT-F(whatever) and kill the process, but... not getting very far with getting KVM up and running a guest OS. FWIW, Xen isn't really what I want here, VirtualBox won't do my 64bit copy of XP, and I'd really like to try out an opensource, linux-centric alternative to VMWare. Suggestions? Hints? Solutions? Thanks in advance. Michael -- Michael Fischer michael@visv.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know KVM very well. Explain a bit more. Do " cat /proc/cpuinfo" Do " lsmod | sort" Which Host ? (OS+hardware) Which Guest OS version? -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
qemu-system-x86_64 -boot d -cdrom /home/user/opensuse.iso -hda opensuse.img You need to add "-m 512" qemu-system-x86_64 -boot d -cdrom /home/user/opensuse.iso -hda opensuse.img -m 512

Did that, no such luck. Still no response to keyboard. Incidentally, its qemu-kvm on my system. Michael -- Michael Fischer michael@visv.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It doesn't really matter. It only means that you installed KVM from RPM, because source compiling will give you qemu-system-x86_64 (by default) -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can you try adding "-no-kvm" ? (I'm not sure if your build supports it, but anyway)... This will disable KVM, and run Qemu emulator. Alternatively, can you try the similar command, but using "qemu" instead of "qemu-kvm" ? It means that your build doesn't support it. OK - this is standard on openSUSE. (let's try to avoid building from source for now)

sort of progress... it hung at "Setting Up Windows", but never gave the screen suggesting I hit <ENTER> to proceed with the installation. Going back to CTRL-ALT-F7, I found: $ sudo /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -cdrom cd.iso -hda win64-xp.img -boot d -m 512 Could not open '/dev/kqemu' - QEMU acceleration layer not activated: No such file or directory ^C Next idea? Ok, did that. No luck.
OK, I think, that probably it might be a BIOS bug. Qemu Userspace works, but KVM (kernel acceleration) does not. I know for sure that XP-64 works for me, which bring me to the conclusion above. Hmm. Why would BIOS have to do with /dev/kqemu not being present? I would think that issue would be on the part of the kvm kernel modules? Also, its a fairly recent system. Only a few months old. Kqemu is something totally different. It doesn't support Windows x64 guests anyway AFAIK. KVM-63 is good, stable kernel module.

It only counts when it was manufactured, not when it was sold. BIOS update can help. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
BIOS update can help. Just look in a website, if newer BIOSes are available (download if they have newer AMD CPU Microcode, aka AGESA)

Oh, bah. Pasted the wrong thing. Real command is sudo qemu-kvm -cdrom cd.iso -hda win64-xp.img -boot d -m 512 cd.iso was produced from the XP disk via dd. win64-xp.img was produced by sudo /usr/bin/qemu-img create -f qcow win64-xp.img 10G Thanks.
