Sorry, I lie. It's worse. It's resolving the link back to CWD and then backing up everything in the directory again, and again, and again ..... From examining my backup logs I've noticed that tar gets quit upset when coming across softlinks that point to ".". Actually, I can't see the reason why anyone would create a soft link that points to "." and assume it must be a mistake, but these files do exist. For example:
/usr/share/doc/sdb/en/sdb -> . tar(1) resolves the link to the current directory, then traverses the symlink again, and then resolves to CWD again, etc, etc, etc. The log shows the file as: /usr/share/doc/sdb/en/sdb/sdb/sdb/sdb/sdb/ ... and so on So beware of this one folks.
