I don't know if they are inept; all other mail providers do dumb things in one way or another.
"dumb things" does not mean "not following standards". If Telefonica has implemented IMAP with dovecot the way I have, they are fine and you will not have a problem.
Maybe it is the web frontend which did the corruptions. They may have software doing things directly to the database. I know this particular telefonica account has a problem (for years) that they told me they can not solve. There is a subcontractor involved. They do not permit new accounts, they tell people to use gmail instead. The account is "robin.listas2", which has an alias "robin.listas", for reasons I don't remember, long ago. When I'm connected to it, suddenly the entire folder will appear empty (no matter the client). It will remain empty till a new email appears, and then the folder repopulates, and the client has to reload it again, whole (I did not check other folders). So I have a mail thread in gmail in my phone to send a "awake!" message to this account to trigger the repopulation. I have not detected the issue since I emptied the entire folder yesterday. It is the only account with an alias.
GMX thinks I'm a spammer and makes me change my password on the web interface,
That is about policy, not about IMAP implementation.
Policy overrides everything, no matter how technically adept a provider is.
My point is about MSPs doing stupid things - can I say stupid here? ;-) If you care about standards, the gmail implementation is non standard in many manners. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
