Ok next problem. I have a new motherboard that the manual says it uses "Integrated programmable Shader model 3.0 DirectX 9 graphics processor"
My screen looks just like a series of green, black, and white horizontal lines. There is nothing remotely decipherable about it.
I verified the problem is not the monitor itself by plugging in a different monitor which I am using on another system and I got the same screen - lots of horizontal lines.
I ran the lspci command and here are the results:
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025/nForce 630n] (rev a2)
I have minimal experience with NVidia, so can only guess your "new" motherboard may be so new that your chip is not supported by 11.4's nouveau driver. Hopefully that's all your problem is. If so, installing the proprietary NVidia driver is probably your simplest solution.
So, where do I go from here? If I can get the video card working, then I can set up thunderbird and email from that computer, instead of hand copying everything here on my laptop, and then troubleshooting will be easier.
I thought I mentioned in your original thread to try the failsafe option when booting. What happens when you do that? If you haven't already done updates, don't put it off any longer. 'zypper up' from your root login on a tty will do that for you, and possibly be all you need. Something that might help is to rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it exists, and/or to move the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ somewhere where they won't be found.
