2 GB of logs is quite big. It means that there is something that talks a lot.
I think there was something going on in my system that I have fixed now, but it will be hard to know if that is why my logs were so big now that I have limited the file size. Well, the way to know is not to make guesses, but to read the logs. It is usually simple to have a look at the text of the log and notice if something is printed repeatedly a lot.
It can be normal activity. For instance, if you handle mail or news traffic, it gets logged. It can be errors in the disk, systems complaining. With syslog I find it easier to know and adjust.
