I also saw the solution in the archives : append apic to kernel at boot.
Problem is that I am screwed, because I need to have "disableapic" in my append line, as my Motherboard have some "disagreement in opinion" with one of my IDE drives. When I first installed SuSE 8.0 the box started to hang at random and this solved the problem.
You could see if the motherboard manufacturer has a bios update available if you haven't already.
Is there a reason you are updating your kernel from 2.4.18?
I'll check for a BIOS upgrade - never thought of that. Thanks. There is no real reason for upgrading the kernel. I use apt and Synaptic and the new kernels was installed as part of an update. There was two 2.4.19 kernel upgrades. First from kernel 2.4.18 to 2.4.19-86 then a few days later 2.4.19- I think VMWare worked fine with the 2.4.19-86 kernel, but I cannot remember if I ran VMware with that kernel. I can check - still have the kernel to boot from.
