VMWare and kernel 2.4.19 don't play nice
Hi All, I have the same problem with VMWare that Michael Galloway and Michael Nelson had. VMWare segfaults when I start a VM. I also saw the solution in the archives : append apic to kernel at boot. Problem is that I am screwed, because I need to have "disableapic" in my append line, as my Motherboard have some "disagreement in opinion" with one of my IDE drives. When I first installed SuSE 8.0 the box started to hang at random and this solved the problem. Any other possible ways to work around these two problems? You could see if the motherboard manufacturer has a bios update available if you haven't already. Is there a reason you are updating your kernel from 2.4.18? -- -ckm

I'll check for a BIOS upgrade - never thought of that. Thanks. There is no real reason for upgrading the kernel. I use apt and Synaptic and the new kernels was installed as part of an update. There was two 2.4.19 kernel upgrades. First from kernel 2.4.18 to 2.4.19-86 then a few days later 2.4.19- I think VMWare worked fine with the 2.4.19-86 kernel, but I cannot remember if I ran VMware with that kernel. I can check - still have the kernel to boot from.
