Of course it does!
You should not delete, but move to an archive. Later or automatically
you purge old emails from the archive.
Or filter the mail as it comes from the inbox to different folders per
mail lists. Then archive or delete mails that are older than, say, two
months.
That's personal preference, *only*!
Mail threading is maintained by the mail headers (your post so far):
