I got your e-mail on suse-linux-e@suse.com and notice you use comcast.net with a cable modem. I just ordered suse 10 and am a comcast cable user and plan to go broadband with a comcast cable modem, at present I only have dial-up. Did you have any problems using a cable modem and could you give me any tips how you set it up in suse 10? Any help would be appreciated.
TIA
jozien

My background, my ISP went under and I was forced to upgrade to cable. I had bought the cable modem, from a local store (recovered freight sale) for $20 after rebate. I had more problems with the cable "people" then with the computers. As I have/had multiple computers, I picked up a router with Network address translation. Pluged it it, went to it's webpage, configured it, ran the network cable to the cable modem, ran a cable to outside the house (no cable at the time, and still don't use it for tv) and had Comcast do a service drop (if you have cable tv you already have that). They will require the mac address off the back of the cable modem, and it's serial number. If you already have either a network, or a network card, you are most likely already set up to receive your IP via, DHCP (Nat box, or Cable company directly). You can't have Comcast install it, as they don't support Linux (I can tell you from the experience at my parents, they are barely Windows/pc capable). I have had several different Linux distros, and so far, all of them have been automatically set to get their IP addresses by DHCP by default.
Biggest tip, is if you need them to install it, keep the machine as a dual boot.
I want to thank all who answered my message. I've been using SuSe since 5.3 back in July 1998. This is one of the best mailing lists for linux. Thanks again, jozien
