The "rule-of-thumb" says swap space should be 2xRAM. I, too, have wondered
Who's rule of thumb ? This was probably a rule of thumb 20 years ago ! There is simply NO agreement on this topic. 256 + 512 = Huge amounts of virtual memory If you really need this, then you had better buy more real ram !
I would suggest: Create 2 swap devices of 128M and see how you get on. You can at any time create more if you have the free space .. I will lay odds you never use them though !

why Linux should have problems with swap>128M. After all, in these modern days a PC can have RAM in the GB range, and Alphas *lots* of GB in RAM...
I'd very much appreciate if some knowledgeable person could elucidate on this.

I have 256M memory and want to set 512M (us usially in unix)
I am not sure what you mean "as usual", swap space size determination is a black art. 512M is way over the top imho..and may even be counter productive. in SWAP partition.
YaST is say me: "Linux is only able to maintain 128 megabytes a swap partition. It is recommended not to use a swap partition bigger than 128 megabytes". But why? Is it a feature?
But to answer this question, it certainly used to be true, but I dont know if it is anymore. If you really want more, create more than one swap partition, I believe you can have up to 16 of them.

Are you telling me that I have a problem?
