I tried that and still get errors wherein the system thinks I have fat32
not fat16 and goes into emergency mode instructing me to manually run
dosfsck. What is the difference between msdos and vfat?

[10-17-03 22:19]: It seems the DOS partitions are available only as root not as user. I tried vfat but it did not work. The partitions are visable IFF I login as root in console and manually mount.
[snip ...]
Manually created /windows/c/ etc all are root:root 755
What is missing?
FSTAB /dev/hda1 /windows/c msdos noauto,user 0 2
MTAB /dev/hda1 /windows/c vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev 0 0
Your permissions only allow root. Change /etc/fstab, /dev/hda1 /windows/c msdos users,gid=users,umask=0002 0 2
