i'm a new bebie in linux. i want install the tar and rpm files that i've downloaded from net. i know few..and seems that it didn't really work. i need your help. i'm dying here:) these are the things i do to install a tar file:
tar xvfz file ./configure mmake make install
..these are the things i do... but i couldn't make the file work.
It will probably be more like this
tar xvfz file.tar.gz (this uncompresses and untars the file (ussually into a directory of the program name))
After you ungzip/untar it cd into the directory it created and look at the INSTALL and README files with any text editor (vi, pico, gedit, word prefect) or with the `more` or `less` commands
If the README and INSTALL files don't give any more information, try this
./configure make
It might be more than that. ;-( Tried to port tar to HPUX 10.20 and IRIX 5.3. In these cases it missed some libraries or files ... Collegues failed as well on another architecture. I might try again and report details it of interest... But basicly it's the way to compile things. Usually easier than installing software on Windows... ;-) Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
