So are you sure there is no other volume control in the chain, such as kmix or something? Are you using KDE or Gnome or PulseAudio?
Fvwm, pulseaudio. I typically adjust volume with alsamixer, or with keybindings mapped to `amixer set Master 2%+`, or directly in VLC (or youtube video volume control). `ps -ef | grep mix` gives no results. `ps -ef | grep pulse` gives mfischer 14912 1 14911 14911 0 Jun08 ? 01:24:56 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog mfischer 14917 14912 14911 14911 0 Jun08 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper VLC audio output module set to 'Pulseaudio audio output'.
