fdisk -l shows my hda partitions. If i plug in a usb drive, it will then show it as sda1. Will not show the firewire drive though.

Do fdisk -l to list all available partitions and you should see the ieee 1394 drive if everything loaded correctly.
Then proceed to modify your fstab and create mount points.
