I have done insmod ieee1394, insmod pcilynx, and insmod raw1394. Does anyone have a clue what is next in order to see the ADS 2.5 inch Pyro drive kit? What device should it be? Have found very little documentation on this subject. Art

fdisk -l shows my hda partitions. If i plug in a usb drive, it will then show it as sda1. Will not show the firewire drive though. Which version of SuSE are you using? I had problems with earlier ones where it would not work or hang. With 8.0 it works right off the bat... You may need to patch earlier kernels. Go to: linux1394.sourceforge.net/ for more info/help. Babu --- Art Fore wrote:

It may be a controller problem. The controller I use is ohci iee1394 compliant and it worked just fine. I didn't have to fudge with anything. Check whether yours is. Beyong that I don't know why you controller would not work. Babu --- Art Fore wrote:

This is a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. I have searched for the ieee1394 chipset for this machine with no success. Even contacted Dell email support, but no answer. Does anyone know what ieee1394 chipset this uses? New subject: Firewire Hardrive recommendations / rubbishing

Hi All, Inspired by the prospect of being able to carry my (15 GB and growing) data off with me I'm considering a firewire external hardrive, and people on the list seem to be getting them to work more or less easily (reading Babu Walad and Art Fore's messages, at least). I am looking at Amacom EZ disk, LaCie's external drive, and Iomega's new hdd portables. There's a fair variation in price per gigabyte, with LaCie a deal cheaper - anyone got any positive / horror stories about using any of these with SuSE, or anyone got a better way for me to carry off large chunks of data? I'd back it all up to DDS3 or 4, but between the scsi card and the tape drive that seems to be getting probibitively expensive for a leisure system, Any advice gratefully received, Best Fergus

Hi Fergus, I've been using a Western Digital drive and so far no real problems. One thing to note is now USB 2.0 is comparable to IEE1394 in speed and performance plus it is much easier to setup and use.
