Once I ripped OpenJDK Java out and installed the "real" Java, everything started working correctly. I've since contacted a couple friends who are trying out openSUSE for the first time and who had the exact same problem... they've replaced Java, and it's now working for them too.
AHA! Most interesting to know and, mainly, that the problem has been resolved.
I installed a "clean" copy of 11.2 off the DVD (on another set of HDs) but haven't yet played around with it so thanks for this piece of "gatcha" to watch out for :-) .
I would call it a workaround :-) It's a problem that new users are going to stumble on and not know how to solve without the inside knowledge that OpenJDK doesn't work right.
Agree with the general thrust of the comment, but.....
I'm OK with replacing OpenJDK with a real Java, but... honestly.. I think that the real Java should be pulled in anyway when Flash etc. are installed with the first time run on the Software Installer. I'm sure that someone somewhere has a reason for including OpenJDK instead of Sun Java (probably some dislike of the licensing thing Sun has)... but in the end if it doesn't work, it should either not be included at all, fixed (I've opened a bug report on it), or Sun Java should be pulled in with other "restricted" packages.
...following your comments I have now looked at the installation of 11.2 I am using (not the "clean" install on the other HDs) and find that the java I have installed is java-1_6_0-openjdk and the plugin for Firefox is of the same name and not the "real" java from Sun. Following from this, I can only say that your conclusion - in the words of one of the Penguins in the first "Madagascar" movie - "This won't fly!" :-) . Something else has caused the problem. I wonder if it is the symbolic link (links actually) - starting in /usr/lib/browser-plugins - to the java which may be the cause? But removing the jdk java and installing the Sun version somehow created the correct symlinks? <Shrugs shoulders> BC -- I work to live not live to work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
