Why are we suddenly convinced it is a cable problem, when you indicated

I don't know that "convinced" is correct rather than a "possibity".
Grab your knoppix or any live DVD, set your bios to boot from DVD and try it out? If it boots, its a software problem and we can forget about all this nonsense of cables etc.
And that is not definitive, poor cable connection might be intermittent.
Hmmm, Let me see.... Worked to install 31.1, Only failed AFTER 13.1 is installed, resumes to work when using a boot-able DVD, then fails again when 13.1 is booted....
Mr. Occam would like to have a word with you.
One possibility is not convinced, just a possibility. :-D A cable wire strip is able to fail anytime if smashed against DVD tray. Some of this tray expose the wire strip when it open and close it. This frequent open and close it breaks some tiny wires. Well, I do not know if it is the case.
Another possibility, DVD tray is not making proper contact. Cleaning any obstruction (dust, debris, etc...) could help. Anyway, you could use an external DVD tray to test software failures. ;-)

Never the less, I think you would agree that the proper thing to do is to boot with a DVD to see if it fails, rather than tearing the entire computer apart looking for the least likely scenario first.
Problem Solving 101.
Sure, first thing, first. The easier and cost less should go first. Boot with a Live DVD or CD save time, money and efforts. ;-) Regards, R.Chung -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
