I think the silly part is actually having this discussion on a linux discussion list. But if you're going to defend the idiocy that is user name handling in win9x, how's this: When authenticating against a samba server, win9x will use the username you "logged on" the 9x box with, regardless of what you actually enter in the "user/pwd" popup when you try to access the share. That one caused me several hours of needless debugging when I first installed a samba server at work.
