Tim, Yes i am very happy with the laptop. The internal modem is a lucent winmodem :( ... although i believe there is a driver that might kinda work for it .... i've tried it under windows (my laptops set to dual boot) and it works fine there... Personally i use a Pace 56k pcmcia modem (which i dont think you can get anymore as i think that the company that made them have gone bust(?)) ... have you tried putting the modem below into the Suse hardware database on the website and seeing if its supported, or try looking at the pcmcia software package's homepage as that might have info on what it supports. Another good place to look for info is the Linux on Laptops web page, it has links to peoples pages where they've installed linux on their laptops and there are several entries for dell 3800's. Its at: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ those pages may have details on getting the dell supplied modems to work. hope this helps Tim
Hi Tim, Thanks for the information! So I assume you are pretty happy with your Dell laptop? I've been happy with my desktop, much of the reason I'm looking there for a laptop.
Have you tried the modem in it? I was pondering which modem would be best (there are four options). The internal is suppose to have "limited DOS support" - doesn't sound promising... However the " 56K PCMCIA V.90 Psion Gold Card Global Modem" says it has "Full DOS support." Does anyone know of this modem? Does that mean it just has a good DOS driver, or that it is a hardware modem?
Thanks, Tim

Tim,
I've got a Dell 3800 laptop with the 650Mhz Piii in and for the most part it works fine under linux. I'm using Xfree 4.01 with Suse 6.4 and the display looks good, as Ben Rosenberg has said dont use SAX to setup X. As for sound, I havent tried to set this up yet (i'm waiting until i get hold of Suse 7 and will reinstall then), but I understand that the commercial version of the OSS drivers is supposed to work (note I havent confirmed this) but I dont know at all about the ALSA drivers.
As far as I know the speedstep stuff is working (i havent had any problems anyway)
ttfn Tim
Hi everyone, I was "browsing" over at the Dell site, and I was just wondering if anyone know how compatible the Dell Inspiron 3800 series (the one with the ESS Maestro 3i series sound card and 600MHz Intel Pentium III Speedstep CPU) is with Linux and ALSA? Mainly, I just was wonder how compatible that sound card is with OSS or perferably ALSA, and how well it's ATI 2x AGP 8MB RAGE MobilityM-1 3D video card would work with X 3.3.6 or 4.01?
Thanks, Tim
