Have you looked in Yast Modem settings???
A couple of pages into the configuration, there is a setting called "Idle Time-Out (seconds)!!!
If you set this to -0- (infinite) you will NOT time-out because of an idle connection. Only your ISP can bump you. My ISP bumped me at the 5 hour mark.
Your problem may also be in your modem init string
