Unless I have kmail running with its 9 min mail check, I go off line after a bit. I cannot find anything in kinternet to stay on line. Thoughts? -- John R. Sowden AMERICAN SENTRY SYSTEMS, INC. It has been a long time since my dial-up days but...I think it's probably out of your control. Many ISP's will disconnect you if your connection is idle for certain period. Check with them. Also, does it happens when you use Windows? HTH, Jorge

I'm sure that there is a tickbox somewhere for keeping the connection alive. It's vague - sorry - but I think I had to drill down a bit in the settings when I used it. I'm positive I found it in Kinternet though. Perhaps check out kppp as well just in case... Sorry I can't be more specific.
A clue may be the word 'persist'. This is what pppd calls the function for staying on-line. The persist option in pppd will also redial the line if it drops.

I believe that with many ISPs, you have to generate some traffic at interval, to keep the connection alive, but ping often won't do it. Perhaps running traceroute or wget or similar on a schedule will do it, if he doesn't want to run kmail.

Thoughts? In your modem settings in Yast there will be an option for you to set "Idle Time-Out (in seconds)". Set that to -0-. This will prevent the system from shutting down your connection.
There are only 2 other areas to check if that doesn't do the trick: - Your modem init string should have settings to prevent disconnect. Read through your modem manual to find all of the items you could add/alter/delete from your init string that has to do with the disconnect. (Use great caution here if you don't know what your doing. You could accidently rewrite the factory settings on the card itself. If you make the adjustments in the init string portion in Yast you'll be okay. - Your ISP may not like you to stay connected beyond a certain time and they will shut down the connection. After altering everything on my system, the longest I was able to stay on was 5 hours before my ISP bumped me from their side. Bernd

That's the one I was thinking of :-))) I knew I'd seen it somewhere. I don't know about the rest of the world but in the UK a dial up connection will normally terminate after 2 hours. Every country will be different though. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. John, Have you looked in Yast Modem settings??? A couple of pages into the configuration, there is a setting called "Idle Time-Out (seconds)!!! If you set this to -0- (infinite) you will NOT time-out because of an idle connection. Only your ISP can bump you. My ISP bumped me at the 5 hour mark. Your problem may also be in your modem init string I posted this a couple of days ago. Bernd

Bernd Thanks-I found the "Idle time out seconds". Your specific text of the field did it. Its in the isp provider section. Thank you very much!.
