Do these lists of supported monitors in the install really DO anything besides provide a list of acceptable scan frequencies and resolutions? I should think with this information at hand, any monitor would do. In the old days that's exactly what you did, grab the book and enter the numbers. Does XFree now actually do some additional communication with the monitor, aside from generating the display, and DPMS stuff?
AFAIK, the monitor selection is just to give the monitor a meaninful name, and to provide the frequencies/resolution. It does nothing else. Not everyone has a booklet with their computer/monitor, and it means you don't necessarily have to dig it out when setting up X. As to which monitor to get, I would either go for an Iiyama Vision Master Pro 450, or the NEC 950FP you mentioned.
