Once the static version is available, is there any disadvantage to moving to this version and removing the mozilla entry from ld.so.conf?

None whatsoever apart from the statically linked gaim taking a little more ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ disk-space. And then you can remove the mozilla entry from ld.so.conf as well... :-)
That's my point - is there any disadvantage to this extra entry in ld.so.conf?

The whole point is that a statically linked program will be larger then a dynamically linked one. There is no disadvantage if this is the only program that requires this library. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998
