I'm thinking of breaking my piggy bank and dropping $158 on a Palm Pilot, now that prices have lowered for the original version.
DO IT!!! Note: Personal is missing the TCP/IP stack and the Mail app, which you might appreciate as a Linux user. However, both are upgradable to Palm III status with an add-on card (YES including Infrared, which some got to work on Linux as well).
The precondition for the purchase, of course, is being able to use most of the Pilot's features without the agony of booting into W_n95 (cringe).
Does anybody use the Pilot with Linux and/or S.u.S.E. 5.2? If so, what applications are necessary to get started? Any config difficulties?
Yep, it works really well, get the Pilot-Link tools, ftp.ryeham.ee.ryerson.edu, I think (experiment with that.. it may be .ca instead of edu, I can never remember it!) You can check my PalmPilot page for some links (presuming it's not misspelled even there!) It's not really extensively documented, but is getting better. Main syntax: pilot-xfer /dev/pilot appname.prc Will install appname.prc on the machine (create symlink /dev/pilot manually). You have to brave several obtuse menus in Win95 to get to that point. You can also synchronize, backup, restore (bulk app installs), synchronize ical, Plan (in alpha I think), there's a free restaurant database called "Food" in the package... Awesome. Then there's KPilot, which is apparently so much more, but it needs glibc! Check www.ultraviolet.org for the mailing list.
I've also heard thru the rumor mill that the Pilot can run a version of Linux tailored for this device. Anybody have experience with this?
It needs at least a 3MB TRG SuperPilot board. I don't see the practicality of it. You can telnet into a real Linux machine with it (Note: TCP/IP!)
Thanks! I really need to get myself organized with this product!
That's exactly what it will do. --- jonathan@aracnet.net <A HREF="http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich"><A HREF="http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich</A">http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
