I haven't tested with 7.4 yet, but the command line I posted is/was required to start compiz on my box at least through 7.2 due to ATI driver issues.(8.47 is the current fglrx driver version) I'll pair down line 36 of /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/FusionIcon/data.py which currently reads:
compiz_args = ['--replace', '--sm-disable', '--ignore-desktop-hints', '--no-libgl-fallback', '--indirect-rendering', 'ccp']
No such hacks required, Matthias Hopf fixed the compiz 0.7.4 packages.

Confirmed: Line 36 of /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/FusionIcon/data.py restored to: compiz_args = ['--replace', '--sm-disable', '--ignore-desktop-hints', 'ccp'] and compiz still starts as it should.
