So yesterday I've decided to take the plunge and upgrade my openSUSE 11.2/x86_64 box from KDE 4.3.5 to KDE 4.4.1 from OBS factory desktop/community/playground repos for openSUSE 11.2. The actual upgrade process went quite smoothly (aside from some packages such as libkdecore4-32bit and libphonon4-32bit depending on missing 32-bit libpulse-mainloop-glib0 libs, but that's because earlier I had to upgrade to latest ALSA libs/KMPs trying to resolve an sound issue). First impression - KDE 4.4.1 does look much slicker than KDE 4.3.5. Sadly, that's about the only positive thing I can say about it. 1. Immediately after login, various nepomuk/aconadi/strigi/virtuso-t services tool over my machine and for 15 minutes there was no was to do anything at all due to CPU/IO usage caused by these. Lots of users complained about this in the past, and yet nothing's done to make this an on-demand activity. 2. The new konsole is simply not usable. It fails to render many fixed width fonts, is very slow to resize, etc. A quick search on kde's bugzilla reveals more than a dozen of issues reported by users of various distros including opensuse, and is not video-card specfic. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215873 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217700 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227246 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227132 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=229400 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=231070 Initial analysis appears to indicate that it is a QT 4.6.x bug (http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-7255). Personally, I find it incredible that Qt 4.6/KDE 4.4.x is released when then a key application such as konsole is simply broken. 3. The first time Konqueror started and I attempted to enter text into the search box, suddenly the search box (and all text boxes/drop downs/combox in all running KDE apps, not just konqueror!!!) became several times taller. I did try to log off, restart KDE, and log back on, and the issue came back almost instantly. Tried reinstalling each 4.4.1 rpm and verifying that all files had been installed correctly - no joy. So after all this, I went back to KDE 4.3.5, and within half an hour I had a working and stable desktop again. I really hate to saying this, but there is no way KDE 4.4.1 is viable upgrade from KDE 4.3.5.
