Basically, downloaded latest lirc package, ./configure'd it then make and make install. After that chmod on the /dev/lircd device and then started lircd and lircmd. Kwintv picked it up straight away.. all I have to do now is get the lircd and lircmd commands to start up automatically.....

There is a script "lirc" in the package somwhere that you can place in /etc/init.d/lirc that will start the deamons at boot time for you. You'll have to get it there and run insserve to set it in stone. I don't remember if I made my own or used one from the package but if you need it let me know.
