I've just set my fonts to 100 dpi by default following the X Font de-uglification howto.
Are you talking about the correspondence on this list or some actual Howto? If it's an actual Howto, where can we find it?
The difference is remarkable. Why didn't SuSE do this for me automatically when I did my X setup? Is there a reason to give someone selecting 1024x768 or higher res the tiny fonts? I see how Microsoft's "Use large fonts" option works now!
How about it SuSE? Just a tool to make the tweak to XF86Config would be a start!
I finally found out where the specific font ordering comes from. Look in: /var/X11R6/sax/bin/mainsax.tcl, line 881 (for SuSE 6.2). If you modify the fontpath ordering in /etc/XF86Config and then call sax again to twiddle your video card, the ordering will revert to the old one. On the other hand, you could go into the tcl file and change the order there to put the 100dpi fonts first. While you're at it, you might also want to add some local font paths so that if you update your system you won't lose track of fonts you've added yourself.
