But if you are done with the usb you could reboot, or sniff around to see where the cycles are being spent. Sometimes usb mounts in a "safe to remove" (I forget the actual name) mode that causes slowness because each write is followed by a close and reopen. Works great for small files, but horrible on larger moves. I've seen this both on windows and linux. Especially if any form of automount was involved.
