Try $ pulseaudio -vvv
if you want to discover the secret.
I invoked it as root and as normal user wolfgang, see http://ariannuccia.de/temp/pulseaudio-vvv.root and http://ariannuccia.de/temp/pulseaudio-vvv.wolfgang, respectively. Invoked by root, the output seems to be correct, but invoking it by user wolfgang produces the well-known error message: "E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permission denied"
Bengt already answered another point.
I already followed his suggestions. Best regards, Wolfgang
