Hi all, I did install kde3 for suse 7.2: First of all, I see improvements all over. Especially the speed is better, but also koffice, konqueror, kmail, etc. I like it, a big step ahead! The look, well, it's obvious that it is targeted to make the switching over for the windows users easier, by having it look similar. I did like many aspects of kde2 more, but I can live with it. And it is customizable, Now changing the theme works (for me under kde2 it worked only for user root). All my favorite apps worked fine, also the ones which are kde2 apps. Same for java apps. So, I like it, I think it is great, but as expected there are problems. Here is what I experienced, and some open questions: 1) Start up problems / kde2 in path ========================= Okay, kde3 does not want to start, as long as there is still KDEHOME and KDEDIR set to kde2 or kde2 in the path before kde3. So watch out for your entries in profiles.local or .bashrc etc. Annoying, but easy to fix. 2) Menu ======= kde3 asks to take over the kde2 configuration, but it does not. I lost all "my" menu entries. Fortunately they had been still there, in .kde1/share/applnk/ , so I just had to copy them to .kde3/share/applnk/ , and they had been back. Same story for the systemwide menu copy (only!) what's missing from /opt/kde/share/applnk/ or /opt/kde2/share/applnk/ to /opt/kde3/share/applnk/ and they are back. But where are the SuSE menus, Yast, Sax etc. All the SuSE menu disappeared, I can't find them. very annoying. Where are they? (May be I'm just not seeing them ...) 3) kmail looses identities ===================== No mails lost, but where are my identities? All conf files for kmail under ./kde, ./kde2, ./kde3 do contain my mailfolders etc, but no more identities. (.kde1/share/config/kmailrc .kde2/share/config/kmailrc .kde1/share/config/kmailrc). So, typing all in again, after looking up the conf info somewhere. Annoying. 4) desktop configuration and font configuration lost. ======================================== All the customization once again. However the fonts, now defaulting to Helvetica, seem to look quite good, better then Verdana. On kde2 that was just the opposite. Why? 5) No artsd sound ============== No sound with any real artsd program, but sound with other "legacy" applications. XMMS works fine, however Noatun and kaboodle do not play anything, they do not even pretend to. Noatun shows the song, but does not start to play it. But XMMS plays fine and the aRts Control Tool shows that it is using aRts! At boot up of kde3 I get: X-Warning: "file format extension wav unsupported" and xconsole : "...modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 ...modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 ...modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 ...modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0" Trying the "Test Sound" button in soundserver (with "Message Display" set to "Warnings" or "Informational") gives: Sound server warning message: ObjectManager: Arts::Synth_PLAY_WAV - Library missing Sound server warning message: MCOP ObjectManager: can't find implementation for Arts::Synth_PLAY_WAV. Sound server warning message: unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/mcop-matt/penguin_local-03f7-3cad5648) (The previous message was repeated 5 times.) Well, /tmp/mcop-matt/penguin_local-03f7-3cad5648 does exist, but where did it get the "unix:" as servername. I never used it, and checked all configuration files I know of, and it's not there. And /opt/kde3/lib/mcop/Arts/Synth_PLAY_WAV.mcopclass is there as well, and ~/.mcoprc contains: ExtensionPath="/opt/kde3/lib" GlobalComm=Arts::TmpGlobalComm TraderPath="/opt/kde3/lib/mcop" So why does it not find it? (btw. the artswrapper needs to get suid to get rid of some error messages about the real time etc. etc. SuSE has it not suid per default.) Oh yes, the same happens as normal user and also when logging in as root. And a reinstallation of the aRts*.rpm's did not improve anyting. And yes, noatun etc. worked fine under kde2. ======================== So the open questions are: ======================== - where are the SuSE menus? - what is module sound-slot-1 and where to get it ? - what is module sound-service-1-0 and where to get it ? - why does the sound server want to connect to "unix:" ? - Why does the MCOP ObjectManager not find Arts::Synth_PLAY_WAV ? Any ideas are appreciated (After trying and searching all night I'm running out of them..)! Matt T.
