I can only support the statement below!
Especially the documentation for Samba is really not helpful, if you are a beginner. It took me hours and days to get my arms around and before the available docs made sense to me. However, I still haven't figured out how to make certain features work in Samba though :)
But, as a starters tip (it took me days to figure that out):
Go to the runlevel editor and in you runlevel (usually 3, 4, and 5) let smbd start.
Now, go to /etc and load inetd.conf in an editor and search for 'swat'. Uncomment the line
'# swat stream tcp ...'
Now reboot. After rebooting, you can start any browser and go to 'http://localhost:901', or 'http://<your-linux>:901' and when prompted enter 'root' as user and your PW. This gives you a nice, browser based admin for Samba.
For security reasons, after configuring Samba, don't forget to add the comment back to the line above and reboot. 'swat' is a potential security threat to your system.
Hope this helps,
-Uli

Try this (The following steps assume your j2re1.4.0 files are located in '/usr/local/j2re1.4.0'):
1. If there is an existing symbolic link titled 'java' in '/usr/lib', delete it by running:
rm /usr/lib/java If not, jsut go to Step 2.
2. To create / recreate the symbolic link to the j2re1.4.1 directory, run:
ln -s /usr/local/j2re1.4.0 /usr/lib/java

The installation I just made went to usr/java/j2re1.4.0
try this:
cd /usr/lib ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java
afterwards, I had to reboot my pc in order to get java -version to return the new version, as per the sym link.
But, I'm a linux novice and I'm sure 100 people here will tell you that you don't need to reboot, but do something else instead.

I have 4 different SunJava folders!
SunJava1 SunJava1-1.1.8 SunJava2 SunJava2-1.3.1
All have the same modified date of when I installed Suse.
The installation I just made went to usr/java/j2re1.4.0
This doesn't sound good.

You prolly have to make a new sym link. look in usr/lib/java and see where it takes you. --------------------------- Eric Carbone

Downloaded SunJava J2RE1.4 from Sun and did an upgrade. When I run java -version I get java 1.1.8.
How do I link java to the new version?
