It look like you forget something configuring your kernel before compiling. Look at the kernel configuration and specially look at the modules you need to use your disk drive (ide, ide2, scsi, ...) and look at the file systems you use. Don't try to use as modules the configurations you need to boot your kernel, for exampleif you are booting from IDE2 disk don't configure ide2 as a module...
