I do admit that the idea of predicting how large a file is going to be with no prior knowledge seems hocus-pocus.
In the real world the answer is to guess large, then trim off the excess later. Later might be when the file is closed as an example. Thus if a ext4 segment is 16MB, then allocate a full 16MB when you cross a boundary. Trim it to size later. Greg -- Sent from my Android device with K-9 Mail.
