Thanks for the replies. For various reasons, I was pretty sure the it was a hardware modem, but I'm not sure now. I'm going to work on the computer tomorrow and hopefully will sort it out. I may be back for more help if I can't.
I'm just sorry I couldn't really be of much help. Have you checked with the US Robotics site? If you type in the actual model of your modem it should give you the true spec's of it. Do not trust what some computer stores tell you. Quite a number seem to state that a modem is hardware when it is actually software. As I mentioned before, I know that I have seen this with US Robotics internal ones and also some Creative modems. Always check witht he manufacturer. They may even be able to help if it does turn out to be a software model. Creative don't officially support Linux (with their modems anyway) but the guy I contacted was very good. It turned out no good and I returned the modem and got a refund. It was at this point that I started to check with manufacturers rather than listen to pc stores. -- Take care.
