I have done it using "OpenSSH". If ran the SSH daemon on startup, (from your sister's router/gateway), then you would then be able to SSH into her machine.
Note: in order for this to work, you'll have to have SSH running on YOUR box as well.
You will also have to make sure that your sister's linux box has a fully qualified hostname (FQHN) which can be recognised externally.

You could use one of the free dynamic DNS services as a work-around to this
problem. Again, a Smoothie will sort this out for you.
