So it's almost as though there just isn't anything there...

IIANM, you should check your /etc/modules.conf, and check the above modules. usb-uhci is for a controller, usb-ohci is for a different kind of controller. If you have 2 controllers, it may be correct, but my guess is they conflict. Maybe the new kernel's modules are now working correctly, since you shouldn't load both.
