xterm function keys not working

Hi people since upgrading my SuSE 7.0 system to XFree86 4.1 (for the render extension mainly) my function keys haven't been working in xterm. or konsole for that matter. this makes yast a little hard to use. also the home/end keys don't work as they used to. I'm guessing that there's a keyboard setting somewhere especially for xterm's, but as the keys work in other KDE apps and netscape I'm at a loss. Probably something that I simply don't know... Any ideas? Cheers people. ps I'm also planning on upgrading my video card soon.
