Thanks Don for your help on this!
I did not even need to change anything other than setting PCMCIA_SYSTEM to
external. No changes needed at all to /etc/pcmcia/config.
Thanks again!

Ohhhhhh.... I think you may have something, Don. That is the one thing I have not tried yet.
I take it that the external line tells it to use the pcmcia-cs and linux-wlan-ng that I download and compile from their respective places? -- Randy Rathbun

: Randy, I don't know how much this will help with the Netgear card, but this is what I did to get my Intel Anypoint II card working, which is also a Prism II card:
In /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, change the line that says PCMCIA_SYSTEM from kernel to external.
Look at dmesg to get the card string and manfid (manufacturers ID) string of your card.
Add to /etc/pcmcia/config. For example, for my Intel card I added:
card "Intel AnyPoint(TM) Wireless II PC Card" manfid 0x0089, 0x0002 bind "wvlan_cs"
I found the wvlan_cs module worked with my card, whereas the orinoco_cs didn't.
The bit about card services not matching and operation not permitted located in your logs below are what I got until I changed the PCMCIA from kernel to external.

I have been looking through this list for the past few hours trying to get my new Netgear MA401 card working. No luck at all. I have exhausted every option out there in search of a cure over the past 72 hours and have found some stuff that may be helpful to anyone trying to get this thing to work.
1) 8.0 is busted. I gave up on it this morning when I reverted back to 7.3. with the 2.4.10-4GB kernal. The FTP install allows the card and it's drivers to load with no problems as eth1 (I have another card in there also, hence the whole eth1 thing).
2) The card is reported to be a PrismII card, but it is loading orinco drivers which seem to be working, though they may not actually be. I can't be sure until I get within range of the WAP.
3) Upgrading to 2.4.16-37 causes the whole shooting match to blow up. Here is the output from /var/log/messages:

However, I don't think 8.0 or 7.3 with the latest kernal update are gonna work. Something is busted somewhere, and I am getting tired of looking at the moment. 72 hours is a lot of trying to get it started.
Any one have anything to add?
