--Keith Thanks. I've been at this, plus a couple of other things, since about 2 am. I'm getting groggy. I'm going to take a break and let my subconscious work on the problem. I may be gone for several hours.

Good luck. Sometimes I find that's the best remedy -- sleep on it and then I get the answers!

After sleeping on it, I logged in to do some more troubleshooting of the sound problem. When I logged in, I got the "beep" sound. I could just barely hear it but it was there. I put in an audio CD and got the same thing, very low sound but there. In the sound config module, I set both Master and PCM to a volume level of 90. This generated enough volume for me to hear the CD but still not loud enough.I used the volume control applet to set a volume level of 85. This is loud enough. Unfortunately, I have no idea how the sound got fixed. I guess I should just consider this a gift from the gods and press on. Thanks to those of you who helped.
