You could use one of the sound packages like Audioity (sic) and then save it back to something some palatable (128/192) to the player.
Something tells me you got a hidden bug since XMMS or your player is syncing badly.
BytheWay, the above audio pkg will need a extra download library to recode back to MP3 but does ogg and wav just okay.
I use it to save my Treo ringtones in Ogg Vorbis.

Hi. I have a MP3 that refuses to play without sounding like a sawmill with a
dual shipment of statics.
It is a recording from a shoutcast radiostation, and it used to play
perfectly. Somewhere either XMMS or the file got fouled up.
I CAN play it in mpg321 witout problems.
I CAN play it in Amarok and it sounds a-ok.
But NOT in XMMS.
Neither does it play if i convert it to wav. Same static.
Is there a way of recoding the file? To write a true clean mp3 again?
Kind of resample it. :)
Bitrate 63 kbps <-- This might be a problem, but i am not sure
